The state space itself — every state a system could occupy, of which metastable states are those it can actually sit in. Not a substantial ground underneath things: it is the metastability each individuation makes possible. The individual and its milieu are both split off from this primitive unity, which is why neither can be understood without the other, and why figure/ground and self/world are the same problem at two scales.
