The aesthetic object withdraws from comprehending appropriation. It does not yield itself up to an understanding that could then be filed and set aside; it holds back, and that holding back is what sets understanding going again, and again, without terminating. Naming this as withdrawal rather than as difficulty matters, because it locates the incompleteness in the object's mode of being rather than in the beholder's insufficiency.

This maps exactly onto individuation, and the correspondence is not decorative. Form emerges through a resolution that is never terminated, the unresolved remainder preserved inside whatever was formed, inducing further individuation because there can be no final solution. play states the same law from the encounter's side. An object that withdraws from appropriation is that structure encountered rather than described: understanding does not fail to complete because the work is obscure, but because there was never a terminated state of having-understood available, any more than there is a finished individual. What reads as the work's inexhaustibility is its permanent unfinishedness, met from the side of someone trying to grasp it.

The consequence that matters here: art's autonomy consists in a non-disposing relation to the aesthetic object — a relation in which the object cannot be had, used up, or converted into a possession. Not a moral bonus but the material condition making de-instrumentalisation possible in autonomous or captured: the mechanism can be isolated from the apparatus harvesting it because what the work produces was never extractable in the first place.
