play

32 · Apparatus, sign, and the space between

The claim that reorganises this whole family: play is the only presence that springs from itself, and it goes out when it is played to the end. Not a metaphor for engagement — a structural statement about what kind of thing an encounter is. Play makes a difference operative in that the attempt to play over it is what brings it out. Nothing stays the same in the unfolding, and there is no residue left when it stops, because the playing was the presence.

This is the twin of individuation, arriving from literary theory rather than from philosophy of technology, and it is sharper on one point: it says why termination is fatal rather than merely absent. A resolution that completed would not be a resolution finally achieved; it would be the end of the thing. Which is what withdrawal describes from the object's side and what attention without closure describes from the economics.

The mechanism underneath it is a loop worth naming plainly, because it is the same shape as order from noise: reference is not given in advance and then matched, it arises out of the feed-forward of figurations changing status, which are themselves steered by the feed-back of the reference forming. Nothing anchors the process from outside. It generates the very thing it is supposedly answering to.
