the gap
The blanks a text does not fill are not deficiencies but the structural condition of the other party's activity. What sharpens this past the familiar version is where the blanks turn out to sit: in the schema-and-correction account of picture-making, the articulations of the whole multi-part process are themselves largely blanks — a schema is set down, a correction arrives that is not derivable from it, and what joins them is nothing. The blank is not a hole inside the work. It is the joint the work moves on. So interaction is already a back-and-forth, and a play-dimension nests itself inside what looked like a concept of imitation.
The consequence for early stop: an interrupted generation is not an image with something missing. It is an image reduced to its joints, which is why it goes on moving in front of someone rather than sitting still to be read. And the difference that opens there has no presence of its own — it cannot appear as itself, it is only the enabling of the distinctions that become positions through it. Exactly what interference shows: an artefact belonging to neither layer, visible only as the offset.
