A figure is only a figure against a ground that recedes to let it appear. The case that matters is the figure that achieves complete self-sufficiency — so fully resolved it no longer needs the ground it depended on — and in doing so severs the reciprocity that made it legible. The ground does not vanish. It goes silent: still operating, no longer sensible, which is exactly the condition Gestell describes at the scale of a whole technological order. An image-generation halted partway does not show a broken figure so much as one that never finished separating from its ground, and never was going to — the pre-individual still visible in it as interference. The ground it is separating from is not nothing, either: it is Gaussian white noise, the maximally undifferentiated state described in octaves and the most probable configuration available at its power, which the figure is being drawn out of rather than laid on top of.
