the Big Other

The Big Other is not a person but a structural position: the fiction of a symbolic order capable of guaranteeing meaning, addressed without ever fully answering. Its defining property is incompleteness — no Other of the Other, no master signifier closing the chain — and that incompleteness is not a defect but what keeps desire in motion, which is why attention without closure is a structure rather than a malfunction. It sits alongside individuation as a second vocabulary for the same refusal of a finished state: in neither case is there a terminated condition to fall from. What matters here is what happens when a position of address stops showing its own incompleteness — when the hole is filled by something that performs closure convincingly enough to be mistaken for it. Where that becomes concrete is the average as material, not here.
