The semiosphere is the whole space in which sign-processes happen — every Umwelt taken together, overlapping, translating into one another. The claim carried forward into working biology is that life is the operation of signs, not that biology is merely like a language. Two properties matter here. Transformations happen at the boundaries, as translations, which makes this the one framework in the set where boundary work is the explicit subject rather than an implication. And the whole thing runs on a permanent tension between becoming uniform and staying differentiated — not an obstruction to be resolved but the driving force, the same tension entropy and order from noise describe physically.

There is a second term worth taking: explosion, meaning a rupture rather than a gradual change. A rupture makes what follows genuinely uncertain, and it is that uncertainty which switches meaning on, because everything becomes available for significance again. Which is why halting an image before it settles produces meaning rather than only damage.
