-ness

Boatness, faceness, streetness. No boat is stored anywhere inside a diffusion model: the photographs of boats were used during training and then discarded, leaving only numerical weights describing how the parts of boats tend to relate to one another. Give such a system a one-word prompt and stop it partway through its denoising — see early stop — and what comes back is the statistical centre of a whole category, caught before it has settled into any particular boat. That is category/neighbor made visible as an image.

It inverts the classical relation between an ideal and its instances. Classically the form precedes its instances and exceeds them, and each actual boat falls short of it. This runs the other way: the average is extracted upward out of millions of particular photographs, none of which is kept. Not descending from a higher order of reality but rising as sediment from collective habit, handed back with the appearance of authority.
